The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in South Africa is an autonomous body responsible for prosecuting criminal cases on behalf of the state. It operates independently from the government and is tasked with enforcing the law, ensuring justice, and combating crime in the country.
The NPA was established in 1998 under the National Prosecuting Authority Act, which was enacted to replace the Attorney-General’s Office. The primary objective of the NPA is to uphold the rule of law and maintain public confidence in the criminal justice system.
The head of the NPA is the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP), who is appointed by the President of South Africa. The NDPP leads and manages the organization, overseeing its operations and strategic direction. The NDPP is supported by various divisions and units within the NPA, including regional offices throughout South Africa.
