Vacancies at Dar es Salaam City Council , March 2024

Vacancies at Dar es Salaam City Council. Dar es Salaam City Council, often referred to as the “Harbour of Peace,” derives its name from the Arabic term “Bandar-ul-Salaam,” meaning “Port of Peace” in Swahili.

Established as a township in 1920, it gained municipal status in 1949 under the leadership of the first British-appointed Mayor, Mr. Percy Everett.

Upon Tanganyika’s independence in 1961, Dar es Salaam was designated a city and served as the capital of the newly independent nation and later of the United Republic of Tanzania.

However, in the 1970s, the government announced the relocation of the capital to Dodoma, leaving Dar es Salaam as a commercial hub.

The city is governed by the City Council, consisting of 26 councilors, with each municipal council contributing four representatives. Covering an area of 1,393 square kilometers, Dar es Salaam occupies about 0.15% of Tanzania’s mainland territory. As per the 2012 census, the city’s population was recorded at 4,364,541, with males comprising 48.7% and females 51.3% of the total population.
